When our client purchased a small bungalow on one of Honolulu’s most scenic hillsides, he dreamed of turning what was a modest Hawaiian-style one-storey house into a comfortable, upmarket residence for his parents.

The house was run-down, and the layout was outdated.

Most strikingly, the view at the back of the house was outstanding, and the idea of creating a luxurious outdoor space to allow socializing with a spectacular outlook was at the top of our client’s list.

Another goal was to create a separate area that could be used by a guest, giving full privacy to both guest and hosts.

This additional living area was made possible by adding a small second-floor extension in which a fully self-sufficient living unit was added with separate access through external stairs.

To make full use of the views, both the main house and the separate rooftop unit enjoy outdoor wooden decks, so the view could be enjoyed from both levels of the house.

BetterSpace helped the client turn his vision into an executable plan that fits with local regulations. The main house now includes three bedrooms and two and a half bathrooms, while the second-floor unit includes a living area, a bedroom, and a bathroom.
